South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI)

SANBI was established on 1 September 2004 in terms of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (Act No 10 of 2004). The mandate of SANBI is to play a leading role in South Africa’s national commitment to biodiversity management, now and into the future. In partnership with the Department of Environmental Affairs and the biodiversity sector, SANBI is tasked with leading the biodiversity research agenda. See: www.sanbi.org

South African Weather Service (SAWS)

SAWS was established in accordance with the South African Weather Service Act (Act No 8 of 2001). Its mandate is gazetted in the act. In terms of its vision statement, the SAWS is striving “to be the foremost provider of relevant services in respect of weather, climate and related products, which contribute to sustainable development in South Africa and the African continent”. South African National Parks (SANParks)

SANParks was established in terms of the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act, 2003 (Act No 57 of 2003). In terms of this act, the primary mandate of SANParks is to oversee the conservation of South Africa’s biodiversity, landscapes and associated heritage assets through a system of national parks. The Green Building Council of South Africa

The Green Building Council SA is an independent, non-profit company that was formed to lead the greening of South Africa’s built environment. It provides the tools, training, knowledge, connections and networks to promote green building practices across the country and build a national movement that will change the way the world is built. Building green is an opportunity to use resources efficiently and address climate change while creating healthier and more productive environments for people and communities. Environmental Law Association (ELA)

The ELA is a non-profit organisation with its main objective to promote and assist in the development and application of environmental law in South Africa. See: www.elasa.co.za

The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA)

WESSA is a South African environmental organisation with a mission to implement high impact environmental and conservation projects which promote public participation in caring for the Earth. With an 88 year history, WESSA has a strong track record of delivering human capacity development projects by working in strategic partnerships, thus enabling people to make more sustainable lifestyle and environmental management choices. The National Energy Regulator (NERSA)

NERSA is the regulatory authority established in terms of the National Energy Regulator Act, 2004 with the mandate to undertake the functions of the Gas Regulator, the Petroleum Pipelines Regulatory Authority and the National Electricity Regulator. In a nutshell, NERSA’s mission is to regulate the energy industry in accordance with government laws, policies, standards and international best practices in support of sustainable development.
